Bucket Hats

First appearing around 1900, the bucket hat or fish hat was traditionally worn by Irish farmers and fishermen as protection from the rain. Originally the style was crafted from wool felt or tweed cloth, as the lanolin from the raw wool was naturally waterproof. In later years, they were nicknamed “Irish walking hats” as they became internationally popular with outdoorsman for their ability to fold and fit within a coat pocket.

Breaking away from strictly utilitarian use, the bucket hat became a fashion icon for the Mod subculture and was made widely known by the TV series Gilligan’s Island. Since then the bucket hat has been sported in both street fashion and displayed in high fashion on couture runways.
