Men's Waterproof Caps & Bucket Hats

Performance materials, everyday style, and protection made for changing weather.

Our men’s waterproof caps and bucket hats are built for weather that doesn't cooperate. The collection brings together waxed cotton, advanced waterproof and weather-resistant fabrics, Storm System® materials, merino wool, and lightweight technical fabrics chosen for protection, comfort, and everyday wear. From a classic cap that handles an unexpected shower to a packable bucket made for travel, these are practical hats that still look like proper hats.

      More Than a Rain Hat

      The Material Makes the Difference

Not every bad-weather day is the same—and neither is every weather-ready material.

Rain, wind, cold, and changing temperatures place different demands on a hat. That's why our collection isn't built around one fabric or one solution.

Waxed cotton provides classic character with natural-fabric water resistance.

Storm System® fabrics bring advanced weather protection to premium natural materials.

Merino wool provides warmth, breathability, and comfort when cold is as important as rain.

Technical waterproof fabrics offer lightweight protection for travel, commuting, and days when staying dry is the priority.

We select each for a reason.

The result is a collection where performance begins with the material, but doesn't end there. Fit, brim design, construction, weight, breathability, and packability all determine how well a hat works when you actually wear it.

      Built for the Elements

      Waxed Cotton

There's a reason waxed cotton has been trusted outdoors for generations.

The fabric begins with cotton and is treated with wax to create a protective barrier that helps repel water and resist wind. The result combines the comfortable feel and character of a natural fabric with greater protection in changing weather.

For hats, it's an especially appealing combination.

Waxed cotton doesn't have the appearance of traditional technical rain gear. It has texture, character, and a classic outdoor quality that works naturally with sweaters, jackets, denim, and casual clothing.

It can also develop a distinctive patina with use, giving the material more character as it ages.

Classic material. Practical protection. Better with wear.

      Storm System® Materials

Some of the most interesting weather-ready hats combine the luxury and comfort of natural fibers with modern performance technology.

Storm System® is a performance treatment developed by Loro Piana to enhance natural fabrics with protection against challenging weather conditions.

For headwear, this approach is particularly compelling because it allows premium materials to retain the qualities we want from them—softness, warmth, breathability, and a refined appearance—while adding greater resistance to the elements.

The result is a very different kind of performance hat.

Rather than looking overtly technical, it can feel and look like a beautifully made wool or natural-fiber cap while providing added protection for changing weather.

It's performance you don't necessarily see—but appreciate when you need it.

      Merino Wool

Weather protection isn't only about keeping rain out.

Cold, wind, changing temperatures, and moisture all influence how comfortable a hat feels outdoors.

Merino wool is particularly well suited to these conditions because its fine fibers provide natural insulation and breathability without unnecessary weight.

It's softer and finer than many conventional wools, making it especially comfortable in a cap worn close to the head.

Merino can also continue to provide useful insulation when damp, making it a versatile choice for cool and unpredictable conditions.

Merino wool itself should not automatically be considered waterproof. When combined with specialized weather-resistant treatments or construction, however, it can become part of an exceptionally versatile weather-ready hat.

      Waterproof & Technical Fabrics

When rain protection is the priority, modern performance fabrics provide options that traditional materials cannot always match.

Depending on the individual hat, waterproof performance can come from specialized membranes, coated fabrics, protective treatments, seam construction, or combinations of these technologies.

These materials can also be exceptionally lightweight and flexible, making them particularly useful for caps and bucket hats designed for travel.

The goal isn't simply to keep water out.

A good performance hat also needs to remain comfortable, breathable, lightweight, and easy to wear.

      Find Your Waterproof Hat

      Waterproof Cap

A familiar everyday silhouette made more useful through performance materials. The front bill helps shield the eyes and face from falling rain, while the compact shape works naturally for commuting, travel, golf, walking, and everyday wear.

      Waterproof Bucket Hat

A surrounding brim provides coverage around more of the head than a traditional cap. Combined with waterproof or weather-resistant materials, the bucket becomes an exceptionally practical choice for rain, travel, and outdoor activities.

      Waxed Cotton Cap

A classic choice for men who want weather resistance without the look of technical outdoor gear. Waxed cotton brings texture and character to a practical everyday cap.

      Storm System® Cap

Premium natural materials meet advanced weather technology. These styles are particularly appealing when you want the feel and appearance of a refined cap with added protection against changing conditions.

      Merino Wool Cap

Soft, warm, and breathable, merino is particularly useful for colder weather when temperature regulation and comfort are as important as moisture protection.

      Packable Rain Hat

Flexible waterproof and weather-resistant materials allow select caps and buckets to be packed into luggage or a day bag, ready to come out when the forecast changes.

How to Choose a Weather-Ready Cap or Bucket

      Start With the Conditions

      Rain & Showers
Choose a hat specifically identified as waterproof or water-resistant. Technical waterproof fabrics and treated performance materials are particularly useful when rain is the primary concern.

      Wind & Light Rain
Waxed cotton offers an excellent combination of wind and moisture resistance with a classic, natural appearance.

      Cold & Changing Weather
Look to merino wool and other premium wool constructions for insulation, breathability, and comfort.

      Cold + Wet Conditions
Performance-treated natural materials, including select Storm System® fabrics, can provide a compelling combination of warmth and weather protection.

      Travel & Unpredictable Weather
Prioritize lightweight construction, versatility, breathability, and packability in addition to weather resistance.

      Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant

      Know What You're Buying

      The distinction matters.

Waterproof describes products specifically constructed to prevent water penetration within their stated performance parameters.

Water-resistant materials help repel moisture and can perform well in light rain or passing showers, but they may eventually allow water through during prolonged or severe exposure.

Waxed cotton, for example, is generally valued for water resistance rather than assumed to be completely waterproof.

Merino wool offers excellent weather-related benefits but is not inherently waterproof.

Technical fabrics and specially treated materials may provide substantially greater protection depending on their construction.

Because the performance of every material is different, we identify the specific features of each hat on its individual product page.

      Made to Travel

      Packability Is Part of Performance

      Weather rarely follows your itinerary.

That's why one of the most useful characteristics of a rain hat is often its ability to disappear into your luggage or bag until you need it.

Many lightweight technical fabrics are naturally well suited to packable hats because they can flex without the rigidity of traditional hat materials. Soft bucket construction can be particularly travel-friendly.

Select wool and other weather-ready caps may also be packable depending on their internal construction.

But waterproof doesn't automatically mean packable.

A structured bill, internal support, lining, or other construction detail may make a hat unsuitable for folding even when the outer material is flexible.

Always check whether an individual style is specifically designated as Packable before folding or rolling it.

Men's Waterproof Cap & Bucket Hat FAQs

What makes a cap or bucket hat waterproof?

Waterproof performance can come from several sources, including specialized membranes, coated fabrics, protective treatments, seam construction, and combinations of these technologies. The complete construction of the hat matters—not simply the outer fabric.

      What is Storm System®?

Storm System® is a Loro Piana technology designed to add weather-protective properties to premium fabrics. It allows natural materials to maintain qualities such as softness, warmth, and a refined appearance while providing additional protection from challenging weather.

      Is Storm System® waterproof?

Performance depends on the particular Storm System® technology, fabric, and construction used in the individual product. Check the specifications of the individual hat for its stated level of water and wind protection rather than assuming all Storm System® products perform identically.

      Is waxed cotton waterproof?

Waxed cotton is generally best described as water-resistant unless the individual product is specifically identified as waterproof. The wax treatment helps repel moisture and resist wind, making it an excellent material for changing weather and light-to-moderate rain.

Why is waxed cotton good for caps?

It combines practical weather resistance with the comfort and character of cotton. It also has a classic appearance that works naturally with everyday clothing and tends to develop more character as it's worn.

      Is merino wool waterproof?

No. Merino wool itself isn't waterproof. Its advantages include warmth, breathability, softness, moisture management, and useful insulating properties when damp. A merino fabric can also be combined with specialized treatments or technologies to provide additional weather resistance.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

A waterproof hat is specifically designed to prevent water penetration within its intended performance conditions. A water-resistant hat helps repel moisture but may eventually become saturated during prolonged or heavy rain.

Which is better: a waterproof cap or waterproof bucket?

It depends on your priorities. A cap offers a familiar silhouette and longer front bill, while a bucket provides a surrounding brim and additional coverage around the sides and back. Soft bucket construction can also make it particularly convenient for travel.

What is the best hat for cold, wet weather?

Look for a combination of weather protection and insulation. Premium wool or merino combined with a weather-resistant treatment can be particularly useful because it addresses both temperature and moisture rather than focusing solely on rain.

What is the best hat for warm, rainy weather?

Choose a lightweight waterproof or water-resistant performance fabric with good breathability and minimal insulation. A packable technical cap or bucket can be particularly useful in warm climates where showers come and go quickly.

Are waterproof caps and bucket hats packable?

Many are, but not all. Flexible technical fabrics and soft bucket hats are often particularly suitable for packing. Always check the individual product description before folding a hat, especially if it has a structured bill or internal support.

How do I care for waxed cotton?

Avoid conventional washing methods unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer. Over time, waxed cotton may need to be reproofed to maintain its water resistance. Always follow the care instructions for the individual hat.

How do I care for waterproof performance fabrics?

Technical membranes, coatings, and treatments can require specific cleaning methods. Excessive heat, harsh detergents, or improper washing may reduce their effectiveness, so follow the care instructions provided with the individual product.
