Sorbatti- A Century of Italian Hat Making

It all began in 1922 in Montappone, in Italy’s Marche region, between Fermo and Macerata, when Attilio Sorbatti and his wife, Ester, started a tradition that has endured for over 80 years. From its founder Attilio, the craft was passed down to his three sons,Filippo, Ermanno, and Nerino, and continues today with the third generation, including grandchildren Marco and Attilio. Over the years, the company has grown steadily while remaining proudly family-run.
The Tradition Of Fine Hats Lives On
“Once upon a time along the Italian countryside...”
It is a story that feels like a fairy tale, one that has been renewed day after day for generations.
Faded photographs, humble tools, straw braids, and timeworn machines stand as quiet witnesses to the work of those who came before us. They remind us, in their simplicity, of the dedication and resilience that have always defined life in this countryside. The hand tools and wooden forms still seem to carry the imprint of calloused hands of those who once worked from the first light of morning until the last glow of day, never ceasing to dream, create, and improve.
Today, the towns of Montappone, Massa Fermana, Monte Vidon Corrado, and Falerone form the heart of one of the most important hat-making districts in Italy and across Europe. It is a source of pride for the Marche region, where generations have been shaped by a deep respect for craftsmanship and hard work. It is through this new generation that fresh energy and innovation continue to breathe new life into this specialized art form.
Why Sorbatti Is So Loved
At Sorbatti, every hat begins with the the selection of fine materials. Whether it’s Italian milled wool, lightweight natural linen, or raffia straw, each fabric is carefully chosen for its quality and character. From there, skilled artisans cut, block, and shape each piece by hand, ensuring the heightened attention to detail of each piece. This is one of the qualities that sets Sorbatti apart.
What truly defines Sorbatti is its ability to balance tradition with modernity. Rooted in the heritage of Montappone, the workshop continues to honor time-honored techniques while embracing thoughtful, contemporary design. The result is a collection of hats that feel both timeless and current.
Customers are drawn to Sorbatti for this blend of craftsmanship and practicality. Packable brims that return to shape, breathable linens suited for warm weather, and raffia styles ideal for travel are at the heart of the collection. Designed for everyday wear yet refined enough to elevate any look, each hat reflects a commitment to quality, ease of wear and care, and enduring style.
