Meet the Makers: The Artists of Italian Cap Making

The Artists of Italian Cap Making

Italy has always set the standard for elegance and craft of cap making. In small workshops tucked into towns with generations of tradition, caps are still made much the way they were a century ago, with skilled hands, premium fabrics, and an eye for timeless style. Two of the names that keep this tradition alive today are Giuseppe Rio and Giovanni Albano, the heads of two family-run companies whose work represents the very best of Italian cap making.

Rooted in Heritage and Craftsmanship

In Italy, cap making is more than a trade, it is an art form, passed down through generations of skilled artisans. Rooted in tradition and refined through decades of experience, this craft represents a unique balance of heritage, precision, and timeless style.

At the heart of this tradition is the Rio family. Founded in 1949 by Giovanni Rio in a small workshop, the company has spent over sixty years perfecting the art of handmade headwear. Located in Montappone, Italy, the historic heart of hat making, the Rio factory stands as a testament to enduring craftsmanship. In 2009 the factory was expanded and modernized under the leadership of Giuseppe Rio, blending traditional techniques with contemporary innovation. Today, their work is proudly featured in collections created for Hats in the Belfry.

Equally rooted in Italian tradition is the Albano family. Established in 1993 in Naples by Giovanni Albano, the company began as a small, family-run workshop dedicated to producing high-quality hats using authentic Italian methods. They have quickly grown into a trusted manufacturer for international brands and retailers, all while maintaining its artisanal foundation.

What unites these makers is a shared dedication to quality and process. Every cap begins with the careful selection of exceptional materials from luxurious Italian cashmere and supple leathers to breathable linens, and more. From there, skilled hands cut, stitch, and shape each piece with precision. The result is a product that reflects both durability and refined elegance.

Italian caps are deeply influenced by the country’s tailoring tradition. Clean lines, balanced proportions, and versatile silhouettes define each design, allowing them to transition effortlessly from the streets of Milan to cities across the globe. In Montappone, where generations have devoted themselves to this craft, cap makers specialize in creating wearable pieces that are lightweight yet structured in design to feel as though they were made just for you.

Every piece tells a story of patience, pride, and attention to detail. Nothing is rushed, and every stitch matters. It is this commitment to excellence that continues to define Italian cap making and ensures its place as one of the world’s most respected traditions.

It Takes a Village: The Mills & Materials

Part of what makes these Italian caps truly exceptional is the careful selection of materials, which form the foundation of each piece’s character. Luxurious cashmere and fine wool provide warmth and softness for cooler months, while breathable linen and cotton offer comfort in warmer seasons. And one of our most loved, Italian waxed nappa leather, adds both refinement and durability. These fabrics are not chosen lightly. They are sourced through longstanding relationships with some of Italy’s most respected mills, including Bottoli, Solbiati, Loro Piana, and Ermenegildo Zegna. By working directly with these mills and attending renowned fabric fairs, the makers are able to select the finest textiles, distinguished by rich dye lots, distinctive woven patterns, and superior quality. They also incorporate traditional Irish and English cap fabrics, ensuring a diverse and authentic range that reflects both Italian craftsmanship and classic European heritage.
